PROJECT SUMMARY

The client ships infant formula in metal tin packaging within shipping containers. Since the product is travelling through extreme climatic conditions, the client faced issues of increased corrosion of tins due to temperature and humidity fluctuations. The damaged packaging, led to the products being rejected by the end customers. Additionally, the temperature and humidity fluctuations caused molding and caking of the milk powder. This rendered the infant formula unsuitable for consumption.

Furthermore, the client faced cargo security issues resulting in food fraud concerns. The client experienced multiple incidents where the cargo’s security, and integrity was compromised. Cargo theft occurred while the shipment was in transit. Formula tins were taken from the container and sold with replaced labels. This recurring incident, threatened brand integrity, and raised food authenticity complaints for our client.

The client’s goal with Arviem’s cargo monitoring project was to uncover inefficiencies in the supply chain from source to destination by having a real- time view on how the infant formula is moving through the supply chain. During the project, the client also monitored the environmental conditions the cargo was exposed to in order to identify risk hotspots and the most problematic routes for cargo quality and security. By analyzing data collected through past shipments, the client could pinpoint recurring patterns and seasonality on problematic routes.

Successful project helped client implement improvements in the transportation and handling of cargo

✅  Appropriate usage of reefer and dry containers based on seasonality

✅  Adapt packaging to ensure excessive moisture is absorbed during transit

✅  Mitigate potential security risks to ensure product authenticity

✅  Optimize the idle time shipments are spending at ports and reduce demurrage

“Thanks to Arviem’s capabilities and data insights, we have been successful in eliminating concerns regarding infant formula authenticity and improved cargo handling”.

PROBLEM

– Shipped from the United States to the equatorial region – to South America, Africa and Southeast Asia;

– Temperature fluctuation is causing condensation in containers;

– Products arrive with damaged packaging – corrosion on tins;

– Product quality deteriorates during transit – molding and caking of the powder;

– Compromised cargo security is resulting in food fraud issues

SOLUTION

A comprehensive cargo monitoring solution to monitor the environmental conditions, identify risk hotspots and the most problematic routes for cargo quality and security.

Providing a ’full service’ package to the client ensuring easy implementation.

KEY RESULT

Seasonality – Arviem’s data helps the client to adjust desiccant and reefer container use

Risk hotspots – Security and quality risk hotspots Identified using historic data by Arviem

Idle time at ports – Client notified in real-time by Arviem to reduce demurrage and reduce exposure to heat

MONITORING INFANT FORMULA SHIPMENTS IN ACTION

Continuous temperature & humidity recording in detail

The environmental conditions of cargo are measured and reported in real-time with sensor devices. This helped the client to verify the quality of incoming components – optimizing quality control and inspection.

Data analytics to identify risk hotspots, patterns and optimize routes and packaging

By relying on historical data to reveal optimization potential, the client identified the significant effect of seasonality on conditions within containers. Based on this insight, the client could adapt the usage of desiccants based on season as well as the appropriate usage of reefer containers.

Automated Notifications and Alerts

Whenever an unexpected event happens (shock, humidity, temperature fluctuation, door opening), or the cargo reaches a pre-specified location, automated notifications and alerts are sent to the client.
